HistoryThe churches of Christ are new to many communities in Scotland but arenot new in any other sense. A study of the Bible teaches that the church of Christ was in God's plan for the salvation of souls and from the first gospel sermon preached by Peter and the other disciples, the Lord added daily those who were being saved (Acts 2:47). More than twenty years later the apostle Paul sends greetings to the Christians in Rome from the churches of Christ (Romans 16:16). Sadly, as the Holy Spirit predicted, Christians began to depart from God's counsel preferring fables (1 Timothy 4:1; 2 Timothy 4:3-4). With the translation of the Bible into the common language coupled with the the printing press, ordinary people were able to pick up their Bibles and begin reading God's Word for themselves. The arrival of the Reformation and Protestantism emboldened people to read, and discrepancies in what was practiced and what the Scriptures taught became evident. Still man confused his own ideas with the purity of God's truth. However, by relying solely on the Bible for guidance on all spiritual matters (2 Peter 1:3), one can find the truth and be set free (John 8:32). By the 19th century, the reliance on God's Word alone was referred to as the Restoration Movement. In a way, it identifies a group of people who reject man-made creeds to rely solely on God's counsel, the Bible, but can cause confusion for Christian and non-Christian alike. The Restoration Movement is not a title identifying a new denomination but rather a plea to reject man's mistakes and trust in God by studying His Bible. While many of the churches of Christ have some tie to the efforts of Christians in the 19th century, the church of Christ began with the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus and was inaugurated by the preaching of Acts 2. It is the church that Jesus bought with His own blood (Acts 20:28) and to Him alone should the Christian belong.
